Apprenticeship levels

There are different levels of apprenticeship from intermediate to higher and a variety of subjects you can choose from.

What apprenticeships are available?

Apprenticeships are available for school leavers and adults (19+). Beginning at Level 2 through to degree level.

We offer three levels at the MET along with pre-apprenticeship courses called traineeships. There is a huge choice of apprenticeships and each vacancy or opportunity you find will specify the level.

Whether you want to be an accountant, chef, mechanic or pursue a career in digital marketing, we have an apprenticeship for you. The first thing to do is think about what you are interested in and what existing skills you have. Our dedicated team can help you find the right apprenticeship and provide advice on which programme to choose and guidance with applying for vacancies. We are experienced at delivering apprenticeships and our approach incorporates on-the-job workplace experience along with classroom based learning at college or e-learning.

Intermediate apprenticeship - Level 2

This qualification or apprenticeship standard is equivalent to five good GCSE passes.

Level 2 is the first level, these apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16. You must demonstrate an interest in the subject, a commitment to working and a desire to achieve the qualification.

Apprentices work towards a qualification/skill such as an NVQ/Diploma Level 2, Functional Skills and in some areas a relevant technical certificate diploma. These provide the skills you need for your chosen career and allow progression on to an Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3).

We offer a number of Level 2 apprenticeships in subjects such as catering, hairdressing, healthcare, plumbing, sales and vehicle maintenance. Find out more.

If you don't have an apprenticeship vacancy in mind or an employer we will advise you on how to find one. Search our current vacancies. We run apprenticeship drop-in sessions every week in both Brighton and Worthing where our team can tell you more.

Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3

This apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A-level passes.

Advanced Apprentices work towards a qualification/skill such as an NVQ/Diploma Level 3, Functional Skills and technical diploma. To start this programme you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade 9-4/A*-C) or have completed an apprenticeship at Level 2 and been assessed to progress to Level 3.

If you have a BTEC or A-levels or equivalent diploma you may wish to apply for a Level 3 apprenticeship and enter the world of work to develop your work-based skills and embark on a specific career instead of continuing to study.

You may be required to have previous industry experience, apprentices working towards Level 3 will usually be in a relevant role already or have worked in the sector before. What an employer is looking for will differ depending on the job to be done, the level of responsibility, your skill set and the apprenticeship standards or framework the programme is following.

We offer a number of Level 3 apprenticeships for those moving from a relevant Level 2 qualification or meeting the above requirements for Level 3. You could work towards an apprenticeship in Business administration, beauty therapy, hospitality, IT, travel and more.

Higher Apprenticeships - Level 4

A higher apprenticeship is equivalent to a foundation degree or Level 4 qualification.

Open to those who have completed a Level 3 qualification e.g A-level, BTEC or NVQ plus achieved a minimum of GCSE's at grade 9-4 (A*-C).

Higher Apprenticeships are a nationally accredited work-based programme designed to meet employers' needs at a higher skill level and include qualifications equivalent to higher education (Level 4 and 5). They are open to all post 16 school leavers or adults and can often be undertaken by employees within their existing workplace.

A higher apprenticeship will enable you to gain an NVQ, HND or foundation degree over the course of 1-5 years. Like the intermediate and advanced apprenticeship you will either follow a work-based learning programme or day-release apprenticeship at college, university or similar.

We offer Level 4 higher apprenticeships in accounting, data analysis, project management and software development.
