Why this course?

This Diploma in Creative Enterprise has been designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to develop your career as a creative professional. It will provide you with an opportunity to cultivate your employability by developing your creative enterprise skills, expanding your contact base (whilst developing your start-up projects), and professional practice.

This course is suitable for students who have an interest in starting up their own projects, or company, and wish to explore and extend their creative practice via an immersive learning experience. This course can be used as a starting point for students who have identified a specific project that they wish to work on or to enable them to explore the basis of entrepreneurial activity by developing essential business and management skills, in order to identify and respond to business opportunities in the creative sector.

Entry requirements

There are no age restrictions for this qualification. The majority of students are expected to be 18+ when they start this qualification, with most having completed A-Levels, Level 3 Extended Diplomas or a relevant apprenticeship.

Course content

What will you learn during this course?  

The qualification is made up of the following three mandatory units:

Unit 1 - The Creative Entrepreneur: This unit introduces the student to the requisite enterprise skills that are necessary to kick-start a creative business venture. Students will examine business models, and will develop their skills in project management, copyright laws, fundraising and budgeting, pitching proposals, marketing and social media. Students will also develop a secure working knowledge of health and safety standards and the associated legislations. The business focus of this unit will complement and support the students’ creative research and development work undertaken in Unit 2. Both units 1 and 2 work together to establish a solid foundation in order to inform and inspire students’ creative enterprise business models in Unit 3.

Unit 2 - The Creative Practitioner: This unit will provide the student with the opportunity to define their artistic ambitions by providing the necessary time and space to research and develop their creative ideas. Students will position and contextualise their creative concept within a distinctive area of contemporary practice and will conduct case studies in order to identify and distinguish market competitors directly operating within their chosen field. Students will also cultivate their networking skills and start building a database of contacts as they start to engage with the industry.

Unit 2 - The Creative Practitioner: Continued:

This unit serves as a precursor to the student’s final creative enterprise business plan and will provide them with an opportunity to enter into a more formal dialogue of personal interrogation and diagnosis to identify ambitions within a specific field, and to develop the requisite professional skills necessary for progression into their chosen industry.

Unit 3 - The Creative Enterprise: This unit requires the student to develop, formalise and present a sustainable creative enterprise business case. Students will take control of their own professional development by independently initiating a feasibility study, which will support and inform an in-depth creative enterprise business plan. The business plan will outline all the budgetary, legal, marketing and health and safety requirements whilst also contextualising the student’s own creative practice within the wider creative industries.
