Studying Barbering at Greater Brighton MET is fun exciting and will leave you with the skills, confiedence and most importantly, the experience to progress into employment or further your skills through study.

This part-time course is for those who wish to pursue a career as an employed or self-employed barber. You will be introduced to a wide range of practical barbering techniques and have the opportunity to develop your skills in customer service, communications and commerciality; all of which are highly valued by employers. 

Our professional salon is open to the public allowing you to gain experience of customer service and cutting and styling for real clients.

Our tutors are experts with strong links to employers and industry. We also invite guests speakers in and run specialist training sessions. This increased depth of knowledge will prepare you for work in salons, hotels, health and fitness spas, airlines, cruise liners and department stores in the UK or overseas.

Entry requirements

At least 3 GCSEs grade at 3 (D) or above, including English and maths or successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing.

  • Shampoo, condition and treating hair and scalp
  • Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
  • Cut facial hair into shape using basic techniques
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
  • Dry and finish men’s hair
  • Create an image based on a theme
  • Provide perming services

Work experience

You will work commercially in our Metro Hair and Beauty Salon.

We have very strong links with local employers, many of whom started their own careers at Brighton MET.

All of our students have an opportunity to undertake work experience, which often leads to gaining a permanent position within that company.

We hold an annual careers day where local, national and international employers will come and give seminars. This will give you valuable information and advice about progression opportunities and setting up your own business.  

We also hold training days, trips to trade shows and have guest speakers to keep all of your training and knowledge current and up to date.


What's next?

After Level 2, you could choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a Level 2 or Level 3 specialist qualification, such as media hair & makeup, or part-time courses in hair extensions, creative hair design or African Caribbean hair. Alternatively you could undertake a barbering apprenticeship, or seek employment.
