Course aims and areas

The purpose of the AAT Foundation Diploma in Accounting and Business is to offer the foundation accounting knowledge needed to progress to employment or further study in accountancy, alongside business and personal skills that are transferable to any sector and additional business knowledge relevant to accountancy.

The Foundation Diploma enhances employability and is particularly suitable for young people studying full time.
Working in accountancy requires good communication skills, information technology skills and an understanding of the business environment.

All of the units of the course are mandatory, and in addition, each student must complete a work experience placement that is linked to the course (ie a placement in a finance team or bookkeepers)

All of the exams/assessments are computer based either using the AAT’s exam platform or an accounting software package. 6 of the units are individually assessed in end of unit assessments, a combined unit assessment that links 2 units together, and a synoptic assessment that draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from a number of units.

All 16-19 (full-time) courses require an application review meeting. This is a chance for us to talk through your choice of choice and ensure it's right for you.

There are specific CEFR proficiency requirements for international students.

Course Costs

All 16-19 (full-time) courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31 August 2017. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment. The cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Work experience

Work experience forms a mandatory part of the qualification so it is vitally important that students are supported in this area, however, the onus is on students to source their own work experience.

Brighton MET is keen to offer you work experience placements, particularly with the increasing importance to complete placements as part of study programmes across all industry areas.

This is an exciting opportunity for employers and students alike to gain something valuable with long term benefits for the business and for students.


What's next?

You can either progress to further accountancy qualifications or you can apply for our Level 3 Business course.

To continue with your accountancy qualifications, you can apply to study AAT Level 3 on the apprentice scheme. As an apprentice, you will have a work placement gaining you invaluable job and business knowledge and experience, whilst also attending college 1 day a week to complete your academic studies.

For 19+ learners, you can also apply to become an apprentice, however you would also have the option of studying AAT level 3 as a part time learner taking advantage of the 19+ loan (as this is a non-funded course)

If you want to progress towards becoming a chartered accountant, the AAT qualifications will give you generous exemptions with chartered accountancy bodies. Both the AAT level 3 course and the Level 3 Business course will gain you valuable UCAS points for those wishing to progress to university.
