Course aims and areas

In Year 1 you will explore creative approaches and technical skills by developing an understanding of critical and contextual thinking.

You will be given a wide variety of project briefs across art and design including fine art, graphics, illustration, fashion, textiles or 3Dimensional design.

There is also a focus on developing an understanding of the creative industries and your employability skills.

The diploma leads directly onto the second year where you will gain specialist skills, creative understanding and experience needed to progress to university, employment, or an apprenticeship.

If you wish to further your skills and have already completed A-levels or another Level 3 qualification, this one year course can be used to build a portfolio to support your progression.

Why the MET?

The MET's vibrant Visual Arts department has a broad range of staff who are all practising artists and designers involved in Brighton’s buzzing art and design scene. Our staff are here help you realise your potential.

You will work in artists’ studios with access to our 3D workshop, darkroom, printmaking studio, Mac suites and pattern cutting room.  

Without a doubt, one of the reasons we know you will love studying at Brighton MET is the location of our Central Campus. Right in the heart of Brighton’s world-famous North Laine, the College is within walking distance of all the city’s main amenities – the award-winning city library, the independent shops and eateries and the beach.

All 16-19 (full-time) courses require an application review meeting. This is a chance for us to talk through your choice of choice and ensure it's right for you.

There are specific CEFR proficiency requirements for international students.

Course Costs

All 16-19 (full-time) courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31 August 2017. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment. The cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Work experience

The completion of work based experience can take a variety of forms with an external company or live projects, such as commissioned work from an internal or external client. Some past examples include:

  • Working with RNIB to run community workshops
  • Placements at design, photographic and architecture studios
  • Behind the scenes as stage hands at Brighton Dome and Glyndebourne
  • Working with a local fashion designer to help with their social media presence

Brighton MET is keen to offer our students work experience placements, particularly with the increasing importance for students to complete placements as part of their study programmes across all industry areas. This is an exciting opportunity for employers and students alike to gain something valuable with long-term benefits for the business and for students.

What's next?

The majority of year 1 Level 3 students progress on to the year 2 Extended Diploma Art and Design course which enables students to study their chosen area of specialism in greater depth. Students build a portfolio that can facilitate progression into university, higher education, employment or apprenticeships.

  • Extensive and well-equipped range of practical working environments and art studios
  • 3D printer, laser cutting machine, large scale ink jet printer, Canon EOS DSLR cameras, Mac animation suite, photographic suite

Additional costs

You will be required to purchase art materials and will be provided with an art materials list upon being offered a place on the course.

You will also require a portable hard drive (500GB minimum) to support your learning.

There may be some trips planned in the year which may incur extra costs.

You may want to purchase resources appropriate to the presentation of your work especially for the final major project final show e.g. presentation materials, structures, props etc.

Additional information

If you do not have GCSE grade 3 or above in English or Maths you will study for a relevant English and/or Maths qualification. 

Project work for assessment will take the form of sketchbooks, design sheets, planners including your reflections and final outcomes.

Entry to the course includes a portfolio review with the course leader.

In your portfolio review you will be expected to demonstrate your interest, enthusiasm and commitment to undertaking an art and design course at this level by presenting a portfolio of current/recent art and design work, including sketchbooks, developmental work and some final pieces.  

 Your work needs to demonstrate your creative abilities, including your ability to draw from direct observation, handle a range of different materials, and make three dimensional work. Please also bring sketchbooks with evidence of research and annotations of different artists/designers/photographers you have looked at in connection with your current work.
