Course aims and areas

If you have identified art and design as a career direction then this diploma is specifically designed for you. The foundation course will provide the chance to explore the breath and diversity of this creative sector.

You will be encouraged to study a wide range of working methodologies, allowing you to make an informed choice about which specialist career pathway to take.

This is the prefered progression route to higher education art and design specialised study and the course has an excellent track record of placing students at prestigious universities across the UK.

The course provides different strategies for generating ideas and explores the different contexts of art and design practice. This enables students to identify their strengths and see how their works sits within the areas of Fine Art, 3D, Graphics, Illustration, Fashion or Textiles.

You will need to research artists and designers to aid your own development and undertake a written assignment that will develop your written, research and contextual skills. The latter part of the course will be project based and allow you to work in a more independent way.

You will work in artists’ studios with access to our 3D workshop, darkroom, printmaking studio, Mac suites and pattern cutting room.

Right in the heart of Brighton’s world-famous North Laine, the College is within walking distance of all the city’s main amenities – the award-winning city library, the independent shops and eateries and the beach.

How to apply
  • Extensive and well-equipped range of practical working environments and art studios
  • 3D printer, laser cutting machine, large scale ink jet printer, Canon EOS DSLR cameras, Mac animation suite, photographic suite
  • Printmaking workshop (screen, lino, metal and dry point etching)
  • Plaster, ceramics and glass workshops
  • 3D wood, metal and plastics workshop including a forge, a pattern cutting room and fashion studios

Additional costs

You will need to purchase materials and equipment prior to the start of thee course term (approx cost £100) and top up

consumable items (paper, paint etc) throughout the year. This will be approximately £5 or more per week . 

What's next?

This course facilitates progression onto higher education. The majority of our students want to go onto a degree or a foundation degree and we have a very good track record of students progressing onto good HE courses.

Students are given considerable support in preparing their portfolios and helping them make the right decision. 

In a few instances some part-time foundation students have progressed onto MA courses.

For those students not wanting to go into HE there will also be guidance on professional practice, arts council funding setting up galleries and applying to competitions and exhibitions. 

The majority of students wishing to pursue an art and design career will usually have a degree in an art and design subject.

Typical Tasks:

  • Conceives and develops ideas and ways of working for artistic composition.
  • Selects appropriate materials, medium and method.
  • Prepares sketches, scale drawings or colour schemes.
  • Builds up composition into finished work by carving, sculpting, etching, painting, engraving, drawing, etc.
  • Approaches managers of galleries and exhibitions in order to get finished work displayed.
  • Uses artistic skills to restore damaged artworks.
  • Liaises with writers and publishers to produce book illustrations.
  • Markets and sells finished work directly to customers.
  • Produces works on commission basis for clients.

Typical Tasks:

  • Liaises with client to clarify aims of project brief, discusses media, software and technology to be used, establishes timetable for project and defines budgetary constraints.

Typical Tasks:
