Course aims and areas

This course is ideal if you wish to build on your experience in art and design and develop your creative potential in this field.

Visual thinking and problem solving are major themes on the course in which the mediums of drawing, painting print making, clay modelling and basic 3D construction are explored.

Based on how your work develops, you will discover other areas of specialism, including graphics, textiles and 3D design projects, meaning that in many ways you shape the course yourself. A student-led project consolidates all of the independent study you have done at the end of the course

Following this course most students will progress onto the part-time foundation course to prepare their portfolio for a degree application.

You will work in artists’ studios with access to our 3D workshop, darkroom, printmaking studio, Mac suites and pattern cutting room.

Right in the heart of Brighton’s world-famous North Laine, the College is within walking distance of all the city’s main amenities – the award-winning city library, the independent shops and eateries and the beach.

How to apply
  • Extensive and well-equipped range of practical working environments and art studios
  • 3D printer, laser cutting machine, large scale ink jet printer, Canon EOS DSLR cameras, Mac animation suite, photographic suite
  • Printmaking workshop (screen, lino, metal and dry point etching)
  • Plaster, ceramics and glass workshops
  • 3D wood, metal and plastics workshop including a forge, a pattern cutting room and fashion studios

Interview and course preparation

You will be asked to submit a portfolio of recent artwork including sketchbooks and a CV, as well as produce a written response to set questions. You will watch a presentation on the course and be given the opportunity to ask questions. Your portfolio will be looked at in terms of its potential to benefit from the course, and to ascertain that you are at the right level for the course requirements. 

You will then be given a one-to-one interview where you will be asked the questions you have prepared for. 

Pre-course preparation

Before starting the courser we ask students to read the following books:

Additional costs

You will be required to purchase an art kit from the college at the start of the course (approx £100). You will also need to top up consumable items (paper, paint etc), so you should additionally budget for at least £5 per week.
