This course gives you key skills in painting and decorating in a workplace style environment.
Course aims and areasThis level 2 painting and decorating course is designed specifically to prepare you to enter the decorating industry.
The course has been developed to teach you key skills in a training environment that recreates real life working conditions.
The tests throughout the diploma are based on you demonstrating the painting and decorating knowledge you have learnt as an individual throughout the course.
Upon successful completion you will either be able to find employment or progress on to level 3.
- Safe working practices in construction
- Information, quantities and communicating with others
- Building methods and construction technology
- Preparing surfaces for decoration
- Applying paint systems by brush and roller
- Applying standard papers to walls and ceilings
- Producing specialist decorative finishes
- Applying water-borne paint systems using high volume low pressure (HVLP) spray equipment
- Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms

This course will lead on to the level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.
The Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating will allow you to gain entry to your chosen career of painting & decorating and will also give you a good understanding of general construction work.
Another important feature of the qualification is that it provides a progression route towards achieving a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
This course is mostly practical work, however theory is also an important part of the course.
There are knowledge and understanding questions to be completed for each unit.
There is also a practical assignment – which includes preparing and painting flush doors and hanging wallpaper; this assessment must be successfully completed as well as a City & Guilds on-line exam at the end of the course.
