Course aims and areas

This HND aims to provide you with the management knowledge needed to work successfully in the service industries.

The course blends level 4 and 5 Service Industry Management units to incorporate topics such as event planning processes, marketing, business tool kit and finance, and developing your managerial skills.

Course Units

This HND is run as a modular course over two years. There are nine core units and four specialist units.

Year 1:

  • The contemporary hospitality industry 
  • Managing the customer experience
  • Professional identity and practice
  • The hospitality business toolkit
  • Leadership and management for service industries
  • Plus additional units

Year 2:

  • Research project
  • Hospitality consumer behaviour and insight
  • Managing and planning an event
  • Global events
  • Plus two additional units

Assessment

Courses are taught with a combination of facilitated learning and practical workshops, with the added expectation of self-directed study.

Students will be expected to work as part of a team and independently in order to complete scheduled work.

Students may wish to top up their BTEC HND into a full BA (Hons) Degree at a local university.

  • Analyses demand and decides on type, standard and cost of services to be offered.
  • Determines financial, staffing, material and other short- and long-term needs.

  • Approves and arranges shipboard entertainment and shore trips and liaises with ship.
