Our Pathway courses are ideal for students who have not gained GCSEs. These courses are practical, fun and taught in small supported groups. Our friendly tutors will boost your confidence, develop employability and offer guidance for your future.

Course aims and areas
If you’re interested in working in hairdressing or beauty, this is an excellent introductory course. It provides you with lots of practical experience, knowledge and understanding of various treatments and techniques.Being on a Pathways Level 1 course, you’ll receive excellent help and support from experienced tutors and teaching assistants. Working in small classes, you’ll notice that your self confidence and self-esteem will grow. Level 1 also boosts your social skills and ability to get on with a variety of different people.
Your study programme will also include some supported English and maths sessions and provide a first step towards gaining qualifications.
Please note: this is a professional course and you will be required to comply with professional standards. This includes wearing the required full uniform, removing all piercings and jewellery and refraining from wearing nail extensions and nail varnish.

Entry Requirements
Course Costs
All 16-19 (full-time) courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31 August 2017. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment. The cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Hairdressing or beauty salon manager/proprietor
Typical Tasks:
- Determines staffing, financial, material and other short- and long-term needs.
- Controls the allocation, training and remuneration of staff.
- Provides clients with information and advice on styles and treatments, and resolves any complaints or problems.
- Ensures clients' records are maintained.
- Undertakes and/or directs hair treatments and/or beauty therapy.
- Checks and maintains any equipment, and ensures that all safety requirements are met.
- Demonstrates, advises on and sells hair and/or beauty products.
- Ensures financial accounts for the business are maintained.

Hairdresser or barber
Typical Tasks:
- Discusses customer requirements, analyses hair condition and other relevant features to define and advise on hair style.
- Washes, conditions, bleaches, tints or dyes hair and provides any necessary basic scalp treatments.
- Cuts and trims hair using scissors, clippers, razor and comb.
- Combs, brushes, blow-dries or sets wet hair in rollers to style or straighten.
- Shaves and trims beards and moustaches.
- Collects payment, arranges appointments and cleans and tidies salon.
- Maintains client records and keeps up-to-date with new products, styles and techniques.
- Ensures hair products are stored and used appropriately and observes relevant health and safety factors.
- Demonstrates, sells and recommends hair care products to clients and advises them on hair care.
