COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is ideal for those looking to enter the construction industry but need a bit longer to improve their Maths and english ability. There are no formal exams but there is written project work based around Health and safety. You will learn a wide range of skills on this course that can lead you to further study or take you into the industry.
Our £9m Construction and Trades Centre provides excellent industry-standard facilities where you will learn the vital skills that employers are looking for. Our expert teaching staff will give you the confidence and knowledge to succeed in carpentry and joinery careers, as well as an overall understanding of the construction industry.

To join this Level 1 Certificate course, you must have completed secondary school education and have a satisfactory six week review. Please contact us if you are unsure which Level to apply for.
Upon successful completion of this Level 1 course you will be able to progress on to a wide range of courses at Brighton MET, including:
- Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery Diploma
Future careers include:
- Renovation (also called remodelling) – the process of improving a broken, damaged or outdated structure
- Building maintenance operative in commercial buildings (small and large office buildings, large industrial properties, shopping centres and retail units) and residential buildings (houses, flats and high-rise apartments)
You will be assessed throughout your course via practical activity observations, and academic coursework. Assessments are based around Practical tasks which demonstrate your skill and ability with hand tools. Your final grade will be a pass or fail.
Steel toe capped boots, shoe’s, trainers are mandatory on all workshops, these must be brought by the learner. There are no extra costs associated on the course. All materials and equipment are supplied by the college.

Complete each step of the application form and then submit your completed form. We’ll let you know when we’ve safely received it with an acknowledgement email.
Application Review Meeting
Before offering you a place at college, we’ll meet with you (either in person, by telephone or online). We’ll send you a link to our booking page where you can select a time that’s convenient for you.
Accept Your Place
Offers will be sent to you via the email address you have provided. The offer will be conditional, based on predicted GCSE grades. You’ll need to accept your offer within 14 days to secure your place.
