Why this course?

A catering student

Our popular fine dining restaurant, coffee shop and industrial kitchens provide an ideal environment to learn the skills needed for a career in the hospitality industry. You will serve food produced in either our coffee shop or fine dining restaurant, where you will develop food service skills as well as customer care, bar and cashiering experience.

In addition to food and customer service skills, you will develop skills in bar service and front-of-house experience. You will explore restaurant service skills including table theatre, silver service, wine and coffee preparation and service.

You will take part in themed evenings, food fairs, community and charity events, developing customer service skills. The College has excellent links with the hospitality industry and, as you progress, there are opportunities to visit hotels and restaurants and work with celebrity chefs.

Entry requirements

Start at Level 2 if you have at least 3 GCSEs at grade 3 (D/E) or above, including English and maths.

If you do not have these grades you can start on our Level 1 course

Course content

Course topics include:

  • Table theatre

  • Preparing, cooking and finishing dishes
  • Restaurant kitchen skills

At Level 2 you have the option to split the course over two years; food and beverage in the first year and professional cookery in the second. Alternatively, you can compress both into one year.

Further study and careers

After Level 2 you can seek employment or progress to a Level 3 course in Food and Beverage Service or Professional Cookery, either full-time or as an apprentice.
