Why this course?

Plumbing student

The construction skills course is our most popular course within the construction department and is our go-to Level 1 course for anyone who wants to learn about construction. It introduces you to the sector and the different trade or building service roles that exist. 

You will have the opportunity to explore several different areas to develop a broad range of skills in brickwork, painting and decorating, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. 

You will also complete some project work, which will help you to develop your interpersonal and communication skills. This will allow you to combine your vocational and theory skills to extend your learning and prepare you for your second year at College when you take on a more advanced course.

Our state-of-the-art £9 million Construction and Trades Centre offers new electrical, plumbing, and painting and decorating workshops, that re-creates real-life working environments.

The Centre provides industry-standard facilities and tools where you can learn a wide range of skills that employers are looking for. Our expert teachers will give you the confidence and knowledge to succeed, as well as a thorough understanding of the construction industry.

You will also be invited to our Employer Hub giving you the opportunity to connect with local employers.

Brighton MET has been the city's biggest provider of construction employees for decades. Our excellent courses are run by experts with strong links to employers providing you with the work experience opportunities you need to progress within this thriving industry. 

On successful completion of this course, you may wish to continue your studies by joining one of our level 2 construction courses. 

After this course, you may wish to enter employment within the construction industry or progress to further training or an apprenticeship. Our Careers and Work Experience Team can provide support and guidance on your next steps.

This course is free (you do not have to pay fees) if:

  • You are a UK citizen, hold EU Settlement Status, or have a visa that could qualify you for home status.
  • AND you are under 19 on 31 August in the year you are studying.

All 16+ (full-time) courses are free to UK citizens, those who hold EU Settlement Status or have a visa which could qualify them for home status, AND are under 19 years old on the 31 August of the year of entry.
