College seeks Chair of the Board and external Governors

Location: Greater Brighton region
Salary: Voluntary with reasonable expenses reimbursed

As several Board Members are approaching the end of their terms of office, we now need a new Chair and three External Governors to join the board in March 2020. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the Greater Brighton community and future of Further Education in the region.

We're looking for people who are excited by the vision and the ambition of Greater Brighton Metropolitan College and can contribute to a strategic, cohesive and effective Board.

The Board of Governors is the governing body of Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (GB MET). It is responsible for setting the College’s mission and strategy and ensuring that its resources are used efficiently and effectively.

The Governors uphold the highest standards of conduct, in accordance with the Nolan Principles of Public Life. The Board is committed to openness and accountability and the minutes of the Board and committee meetings are available here.

The Board has a maximum of 10 governors with seven external governors, a staff governor, a student governor and the CEO. External Governors bring a range of experience and knowledge from the business, public and voluntary sectors as well as local schools and community groups. The full Board meets every month (apart from August).

There are two committees; the Audit Committee meets termly and is made up of five members – with three governors and two co-opted members. The Remuneration Committee has three members. Special committees are established as required.

The term of office is three years (subject to annual review) with the potential to serve up to three terms.

The time commitment is based around monthly board meetings (except August) which start at 16:30, two strategic away days in Autumn and Spring and an annual strategic review day in June each year. In addition, the Chair and Governors will be expected to get involved with the College; to be visible and engage with staff and students and attend events both internally and externally to represent the College.

It is estimated that the Chair will be required to commit to two-three days per month and the Governors one day per month.
