Learning remotely: advice for current students

We appreciate that this is an unsettling time and you may have a lot of concerns. After your safety and wellbeing, our next priority is to ensure your education can continue with the minimal disruption possible.

We will be maximising the use of online teaching and learning resources that you can access from home. For some students, this is a completely new way of studying and learning so we’ve put together some tips to help:

  1. Follow your usual routine as much as you possibly can. Your teacher will set work for you as per your existing timetable and will be available at the start of each session for any queries - this includes any English and maths lessons. 

  2. Feedback and help. Your teacher will let you know when to expect a response to any queries and feedback on your work. Please tell your teacher if you are finding remote study a challenge as they may be able to offer additional support.

  3. Keep to your usual sleep routine. Go to bed and wake up at the same time as normal. It’s important that you get enough sleep and you’re prepared to follow your college timetable as usual.

  4. Look after yourself. We’re still here to help if you need us. Our Pastoral Mentors are working remotely and can be contacted at mentor@gbmc.ac.uk.   5. Keep on top of work: Follow the coursework set by your teacher and ensure that you complete tasks or assignments on time so you don’t get behind. If you are finding it difficult to adjust to a new way of learning, speak to your teacher as soon as possible so they can offer additional support.

  6. Take regular breaks. Every half an hour or so take a five-minute break to get up, walk about, have a stretch or make a cup of tea! You’ll come back to your work feeling refreshed and more able to concentrate.

  7. Keep in touch with your friends/classmates online. You could even form an online study group with your classmates to help and support each other. Chatting to others online can help you to feel less isolated and motivate you to keep on top of your work.

  8. Reward yourself. When you’ve completed a task or project, or have worked really hard, treat yourself to something - maybe your favourite snack or watching TV or playing a game. Knowing that reward is coming should help motivate you to do the work first!
