We offer a range of Access to Higher Education courses. Access courses are ideal for students who want to gain a degree-level qualification, but need help gaining the academic skills and confidence needed to progress to university.

Karen Jeffries - Access to Higher Education Psychology
There were many times, particularly before Christmas, where I felt I wasn't cut out for the course and I just could not do it.
I now feel confident in my ability to complete the course with hopefully a place at university confirmed in the not too distant future. This course really is a great opportunity for those returning to education pursuant to university.

After ten years in my job I decided it was time for a career change. Having been out of education for 15 years, this was a challenge, however, with the support of my tutors and peers I am now studying Nutrition and Dietetics at Nottingham University and am well on the way to the career I’ve always wanted.

Alice Williams - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health and Health Sciences
I have always wanted to work in nursing but had no formal qualifications so did not meet the entry requirements for the Access course. The MET offered me a free pre-Access course which enabled me to develop my study skills, improve my English and maths and gain GCSEs in these. I then enrolled on the Access Health Sciences course. The teachers were extremely helpful and supportive and I really enjoyed the course. Having decided to apply for a degree in nursing, I was given lots of advice and guidance by my Access personal tutor to help me prepare my UCAS application, including helping me to draft an effective personal statement. I was delighted to be offered a place at Brighton University where I successfully completed the three-year degree. After university, I secured my dream job in nursing and am now training to become a gynaecologist.
Daniel Campbell - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Humanities and Social Science
I have been employed in my dream job with Medicines Sans Frontiers in South Sudan since my graduation from BA Hons Development Studies at SOAS in 2018. Whilst my degree certainly helped in achieving this, it wouldn’t have been possible without having first attended the Access to Humanities and Social Science course at the MET. I was incredibly apprehensive about returning to education and had a negative experience when attempting to enrol on another Access course, but the friendly and welcoming environment at the MET made me feel at ease and took a significant amount of pre-enrolment anxiety away. Additionally, having met a number of mature students during the course of my studies, I strongly believe that the courses offered at the MET are some of the best Access courses available. Thank you for facilitating a great course and creating a welcoming environment!
Tomas Forzani-Fawcett - Access to Higher Education Applied Sciences
I just thought i'd write you a quick email expressing my thanks for your help in getting me through college and to university. I am doing well and I am enjoying the modules so far, Forensic science principles being the most interesting, I got 81% on my first lab book marking! I also noticed how applied science has helped me, the individual unit on Forensic science within the course has proved very helpful in the labs as I have been one of few who already know how to use some of the equipment and have previous knowledge on some of the subjects. I genuinely feel like I have an advantage.

I never had any intention of applying to Cambridge and before the course began I felt like I had lost my chance to gain a degree, however, my tutor gave me the encouragement and support that I needed to give it a go.
Receiving an offer was an incredible and wonderful surprise. I could never have predicted the successes of that year and my consequent achievements - I certainly would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the access course at the MET!
Odi - Access to Higher Education Psychology
I have always been interested in art and psychology and set up a project for teenagers in Brighton that focused on using music and art to support teenagers with mental health issues.
My interest in psychology led me to apply for the Access course at the MET. As someone with English as an additional language this was challenging, but I was given lots of support by my tutors who also flagged my dyslexia and arranged for me to see an Educational Psychiatrist. This appointment ensured that my dyslexia support continued after my Access course when I progressed to university.
Alongside my Access course at the MET, I also studied maths GCSE and received lots of support from my maths tutor, particularly with algebra which, like many students, I found particularly difficult.
Having studied black history from an African perspective, I found parts of the literature course fascinating as we looked at the novel Small Island and the experiences of black people from the Caribbean moving to England which I had not studied before.
During the Access course I talked a lot with my tutors about what direction I might choose to take in the future. I considered doing psychotherapy foundation but eventually decided that the social sciences degree would be my best option. One of the major advantages of being an Access student at the MET was the friendliness of the staff. The tutors are approachable and open and I felt I could talk to them about every aspect of the course and my future goals. I secured a place at Brighton University and after successfully completing my degree, I completed the MA in Social Work at Sussex University and won the Social Work Student of the Year award.
I am now working as a social worker at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. I have also managed to maintain my career as an artist. In addition to supporting the continuation of my youth work project, I also work as an artist and have secured exhibitions in Liverpool and Ghana. I am also thinking about doing a PHD in Anthropology at Oxford University or the University of Ghana. What I love about the Access course is that it offered me lots of opportunities to think critically about what’s best for me and gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams.
Holly Thornton - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health and Health Sciences
The health and health science Access course helped to prepare me for my university interviews and for a university course in general. The modules on the course are really relevant and you feel one step ahead of the others once you are at university. I would not be in my second year at Plymouth University now studying to become a paramedic if it wasn’t for the Access course.
Holly Adcock - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health and Health Sciences
I am currently in my third and final year of studying Paramedic Practice BSc at University of Surrey. Prior to this I studied the Access course at the MET.
I cannot recommend it enough! It really helped me develop and refine the academic skills and knowledge that I needed for my degree. The anatomy and physiology modules were more in depth than those in my first year of my university course, so I was well ahead of the game.
The modules on academic writing skills and specifically referencing really helped me when it came to writing assignments for my university studies.
The modules on descriptive statistics made my head spin, but I’m very grateful for them now that I am writing my dissertation and having to get my head around the research articles available.
Going back to college to do my Access course in 2014, five years after finishing my A-Levels, was one of the best choices I’ve ever made because it allowed me to progress on to university, and in six months time I will qualify as a paramedic!
I am really enjoying university, I am finding the assignments interesting, and I absolutely love being out on placement in the back of an ambulance.
When I qualify I want to work for South East Coast Ambulance service, potentially in the Worthing area. So keep an eye out for me!
Hannah McMillan - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health and Health Sciences
Doing this Access course was the best decision I made for my learning. I didn’t get along with traditional college and A-Levels but I knew I wanted to go to university to study midwifery which is why this course was perfect. I learnt things relevant to healthcare, some of the key biology needed and the lessons always kept me engaged. The workload prepared me so well for university, and it was nice to have a head start on how to reference my work correctly - something which a lot of my cohort didn’t know when we started at uni. I found having to do my own research especially useful and gave me lots of things to talk about during my interviews! The support given overall was fantastic and I don’t think I would have gotten into the top midwifery degree in the county without all the help from the tutors at the MET!
I am now in my 2nd year at King's College London and loving it and hoping to get a job at King's College Hospital next year!
Eunice Ngina - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health and Health Sciences
The Access course and its supportive tutors prepared me really well for my university degree course in Criminology and Sociology at Sussex University. I felt that I knew so much more than many other students on my course, due to the amount of information we were taught, and I felt so much more prepared for the different assessments, resulting in no surprises when I arrived at university. The Access course has given me the confidence to contribute to class discussions, which I would have thought next-to-impossible a year ago. I have also achieved grade ones for my first module assignments.

The Access course has given me a great base of knowledge to build on as well as growing my passion for studying the brain. I'm still in shock at the thought that I'll be studying neuroscience at Cambridge but I'm grateful to Ruth and Christine for all their hard work in helping me to realise my dream of becoming a scientist.
Samantha Cooper - Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health and Health Sciences
I studied at Brighton MET in September 2013 doing the Health and Health Sciences course with the aim of one day becoming a midwife. The course and support I received led to me being offered five university placements of which I took up City University of London 2014. I qualified as a midwife in September 2018 and now I work in one of the UK’s busiest hospitals on the labour ward and could not be happier.
