Students develop a range of theoretical and practical skills that are needed within the games industry.

This course develops students’ understanding of a range of game development techniques within Years 1 and 2 - allowing students to specialise in the development of specific types of asset in the third year.

In the first year, you will gain fundamental skills relating to games design and development - including programming, developing 2D graphics, 3D modelling and game design theory. These skills are further extended in the second year, using industry-standard tools and technologies to gain practical experience of building a range of multimedia assets and prototype games. In the optional third year, you will focus on the development of particular types of asset, such as modelling, level design, coding, animation or sound – working with other students to build game prototypes from these assets.

PCs in the teaching rooms are regularly updated with a range of industry-standard software. Students also have access to flexible learning areas where they can seek support from specialist staff for a range of software applications, publications and databases.

Staff have links to a number of regionally based companies such as Mind Candy, Creative Assembly, Brightrock Games and Nearlight.

On successful completion of the two-year FdA course, you can progress to the third year top-up course to gain the BA (Hons) Game Asset Development. Go to Year 3 page

On successful completion of the two-year FdA course, students can either progress to the optional third year BA (Hons) Game Asset Development, or enter employment.
