Happy New Year - College guidance for the new term | 4 January 2022

Dear GB MET student

I wish you a very Happy New Year and I hope that you had a good break over the Christmas period.

We are so proud of all of you. During term one you continued to show a positive attitude towards your learning and you showed respect and kindness towards one another. These are key attributes and your positive attitude makes GB MET an amazing place for everyone. Thank you for being a great role model to others.

We can't wait to welcome you back to the College when term starts tomorrow, Wednesday 5 January. (Please note that for HE students, term starts on Monday 10 January)

In preparation for your return, please read this update carefully - it includes an overview of the latest guidance related to Covid-19, an update on our Positive about Attendance strategy, and a reminder to wear your ID badge at all times whilst in College.

Covid-19

In line with the current Covid-19 government guidance, your classes will continue on site as per your current timetable. We will aim to maintain this position at all times, but we have developed contingency arrangements should we need to respond to large numbers of either staff or student absences due to self-isolation. Should contingency arrangements be required, these will be notified to you by your department.

Government guidance has been updated to recommend the wearing of face coverings in classrooms, workshops and studios. We will be implementing this guidance which will mean that when you return to college you should wear a face covering at all times unless you are eating or drinking in the refectory areas. Should you forget to bring your face covering, you can collect one from our reception areas. If you are exempt, please ensure you have obtained a green ID badge holder so we can clearly identify you - speak to your teacher if required.

The requirement for face coverings is temporary and will be reviewed before the end of January.  Should the government guidance change, we will update you on our revised arrangements as quickly as we can.

Before you return to college, please use a lateral flow device to test yourself for Covid-19. You should then resume testing twice a week. If at any time you receive a positive result, please book a PCR test for confirmation. All positive results should be reported to NHS Test and Trace. Please also email covid19.absence@gbmc.ac.uk, your tutor, and complete this form.

There has been a change to the self-isolation requirements. If you’ve tested positive or have symptoms, you can stop self-isolating after seven days (instead of 10 days) if you get two negative lateral flow test results on day 6 and 7 and do not have a high temperature.

Positive about Attendance

As you know, at GB MET we are ‘Positive about Attendance’ as students with good attendance are more likely to achieve their goals. We also recognise that some of you may need some help to improve your attendance and we are here to support you with this. We want to celebrate improved attendance as well as good attendance and your department managers and teachers have implemented ‘Positive about Attendance’ celebrations!

When you come back to college, the classes with the BEST and the MOST IMPROVED attendance will be entered into our monthly prize draw and you will have the opportunity to WIN an enrichment activity for your class. Furthermore, your departments will be implementing local prize draws, awards and rewards for improvements in attendance. Look out for the PRIZE information from your teachers!

If you are worried about your attendance, we can help you – please contact our Pastoral team: pastoral@gbmc.ac.uk.

ID badges

As you return to college, please can I remind you of the importance of wearing your ID badge at all times while you are on site. This is a requirement across all campuses. It is a safeguarding measure which allows us to manage who is accessing our buildings and helps us to keep you safe. If you have misplaced your badge, you must collect a temporary one from the reception of your campus. Replacement badges can also be bought from each reception.

It is really important you wear your badge; please make sure you do so. Thank you.

Thank you once again for your continued support.

Helena Thomas
Principal
