Counselling

This course will help you build upon and consolidate your interpersonal skills and knowledge. It is also designed to further careers in counselling, health and social care, childcare, or learning and development. You will learn effective communication skills and engage in a one-to-one helping relationship.

The mandatory units for this course are:

  • Introduction to counselling skills theories
  • Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
  • Counselling skills and personal development

Entry requirements

Applicants must have achieved, or be working towards a Level 1 Counselling qualification.

Applicants will need to complete a short form prior to their interview. 

Applicants need a good level of English. If English is not your first language, you will need Entry Level 3 or above.

Funding

If the following criteria apply, you qualify for one of our free Opening Doors programmes.

  • 19+

  • Unemployed and claiming a means-tested benefit (see Cost & Finance tab for more information)

  • Employed and earning less than £17,004.00 per annum

  • Currently seeking work

Course fees

Our Opening Doors courses are free to those currently unemployed and in receipt of a means-tested benefit. 

You will need to provide evidence of your benefit in order to receive a fee waiver for this course. 

We accept the following means-tested benefits for this course: 

  • Universal Credit
  • JSA
  • ESA
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Council Tax Benefit (not reduction)
  • Pension Credit 

Please note we cannot accept DLA, Carers Allowance, PIP or Tax Credits. 

Low wage remission

This course is also free to those who are currently employed and earning less than £17,0004 per year. 

We accept the following evidence: 

  • P60
  • Last three months payslips
  • Tax credit notice (for self-employed)

Please note you will also need to bring photo ID to your enrolment.
