Interview, portfolio and audition information for university-level courses

Changes for 2021 entry

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to make changes to some of our recruitment processes. As a result, you will not be expected to attend an in-person interview as these will take place virtually instead.

Information about course specific requirements regarding interviews, portfolios and auditions (if applicable) is available below.

Changes for 2021 entry
  • Acting - BA (Hons)

    Please record a two-minute monologue from a published source, which you have memorised and staged. No props/costumes. You will need to send your monologue to the course tutor vanessa.cornford@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Communication Design (Graphic Design/Illustration) - BA (Hons) top-up (third year only)

    Please submit a digital portfolio of work from your current studies, include any self-initiated work, photography/sketchbooks etc. you feel demonstrates your creative, technical, written and visual abilities, please send you work to michael.chester@gbmc.ac.uk . A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Computing – HNC/HND

    Interviews will take place via telephone; you will be emailed the details, this will be your opportunity to discuss your expectations of the course and have any questions answered.

  • Costume for Performance & Film - BA (Hons)

    Please submit a digital portfolio of design artwork as well as finished garments or samples of needlework to janey.gardiner@gbmc.ac.uk A short telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Creative Media Practice (Photography/Digital Filmmaking/Digital Experience Design) - BA (Hons) top-up (third year only)

    Please upload a digital portfolio and/or a show reel of your best work, both course and individual which demonstrates your creative, technical, written and visual abilities. Please send your work to mary.tennant@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Dance & Professional Practice - BA (Hons)

    Please upload a recording of a 1.5-2 minute dance solo in a style of your choosing, send this to keryie.vickers@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Electronic Engineering - HNC

    Interviews will take place via telephone, you will be emailed the details.

  • Fashion Design - BA (Hons)

    Please upload a digital portfolio consisting of no more than 40 pieces of work which should include sketchbooks, colour work, drawings and some evidence of written work. We would also like to see a selection of garments you have made. Please send your work to gayle.atkins@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Fine Art - BA (Hons) (full-time and part-time courses)

    Please upload photographs of your artwork, which demonstrates creative, technical, written and visual abilities. This could include work produced from both current and previous courses or any individual work produced from a range of specialist areas such as graphics, illustration, textiles and 3D design. If possible, please also submit an example of your written work. This could be an essay or written assignment that demonstrates your use of English Language to show your ability to structure, present, research and interpret your work. It would be good if you could attach a copy of a tutor's written assessment of this work.

    We are also interested to see photographs from your sketchbooks/ideas books and any other evidence of your interest in Fine Art. Please send your work to teresa.whitfield@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged.

  • General Engineering - HNC

  • Graphic Design - BA (Hons)

    Please upload a digital portfolio of your work, which should include samples of work in a wide range of media plus sketchbooks. Please send to susan.sanders@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged.

  • Hair & Make Up for Theatre & Media - BA (Hons)

    Please upload a digital portfolio of work or samples, as appropriate that best demonstrates your abilities. This should include good quality photographs of a range of 2D sketchbooks, drawings, paintings, design artwork, 3D models, sculptures etc.

    Please also upload photographs of any hair and make-up work undertaken. Send your work to Alison.pollard@gbmc.ac.uk . A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Illustration - BA (Hons)

    Please upload a digital portfolio of your work, which should include samples of work in a wide range of media plus sketchbooks. Please send your work to alan.baker@gbmc.ac.uk. A short telephone interview may also be arranged.

  • Motorsport Engineering - FdEng (Foundation Degree)

  • Music Business & Management - BA (Hons)

    Interviews this year will take place via telephone, Zoom or Google Meet. We are looking for ambitious candidates with evidence of, or aptitude for business and marketing in a Music Industry context.

  • Music Performance - BA (Hons)

    Interviews this year will take place via telephone, Zoom or Google Meet. In advance of the interview, we ask that you record and submit a 3-4 minute audition piece - smartphone recording will be sufficient. Choose a piece you are familiar with and is within your technical ability. We will then have a conversation about your choice of material and the instrumental/vocal techniques used in the performance.

    Your interview process will include a simple music theory test for us to assess your current level (20 mins)

    You also need to submit evidence of your written English; this can be a piece of existing academic work, or a 500 word review of a track of your choice paying particular attention to the musicianship and performance

    Entry to BA degree level study assumes prior academic standard achievement at A-Level: however, mature students may not be formally qualified. Our interview process is designed to get an overall view of your skills. Weaknesses in one or two areas will not prevent you from being offered a place on the course.

  • Music Production - BA (Hons)

    Interviews this year will take place via telephone, Zoom or Google Meet. Please submit two or three examples of your music and one piece of evidence of your written English; this can be existing academic work or a 500 word review of a track of your choice, paying particular attention to music production issues.

    Your interview process will include the following:

    1. Demonstration of recorded work
    2. Evidence of written skills (see above requirements)
    3. Evidence of listening skills
    4. Interview with question and answer session

    Entry to BA degree level study assumes prior academic standard achievement at A-Level: however, however, mature students may not be formally qualified. Our interview process is designed to get an overall view of your skills. Weaknesses in one or two areas will not prevent you from being offered a place on the course.

  • Musical Theatre - BA (Hons)

    Please submit two contrasting Musical Theatre songs which must be sung unaccompanied and upload to keryie.vickers@gbmc.ac.uk. A telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Photography - BA (Hons)

    Please submit a small digital portfolio of work along with some written work, which you feel, is appropriate to the course. Please send this to Mary.tennant@gbmc.ac.uk a telephone interview may also be arranged with you.

  • Production Design for Stage & Screen - BA (Hons)

    Please submit a digital portfolio of work or samples, as appropriate, that best demonstrate your abilities. This should include a range of good quality photographs of 2D sketchbooks, drawings, paintings, design artwork, 3D models, sculptures etc.

  • Prop Making & Special Effects - BA (Hons)

    Please submit a digital portfolio of work or samples, as appropriate that best demonstrates your abilities. Most applicants will show varied strengths and weaknesses in their design/ technical or practical skills, so show all aspects of yourself as a designer, artist, technical and practical maker and this will be a good start.You should show a variety of skills from the following list (very few will show all things listed):

    • Designs sketchbooks/ notebooks and visual thinking- these show your creativity and imagination
    • Life drawing/ mark making- these show your expressive and observational skills
    • Painting and illustrations- these show your knowledge in using a variety of colour mediums
    • Pencil sketches/Technical drawing/ by hand and/or digital- these show your precision and visual communications skills

      Photographs of:
    • Sculptures in a variety of materials, such as clays, wood, metal, foams, plastics etc
    • Puppets, models, prop costumes, furniture, scenic construction, hand and hero props
    • Props and Models made for hobbies such as Cos-Play, Larp, wargaming etc

  • Technical Theatre Production - BA (Hons)

    Interviews will take place via telephone. Your interview will include an informal chat about the course and your previous experience. Please submit a digital portfolio of productions that you have worked on or been involved with to be discussed at your interview. Please send your work to jo.loader@gbmc.ac.uk

  • Textile Design - BA (Hons)

    Please submit a digital portfolio of up to 20 sheets of work, as well as images from your sketchbooks

    • Include a variety of work that shows the full range of your skills and use of media e.g. research artwork (drawings, paintings, collages, multimedia artwork), developmental ideas, sketchbooks and finished project outcomes.
    • We like to see evidence of the whole creative process from research and initial artwork through the whole development of ideas - to help us see this ensure that at least one of your sketchbooks relates to finished work in the portfolio.

    What we are looking for:

    • We are more interested in your creative potential rather than assessing what your current course has allowed you to achieve
    • Creative artwork and ideas are more important than finished textile pieces
    • Good observational drawing skills - by this we mean use of any media and in any style - showing your own personal style
    • A feel for colour, form, pattern, texture
    • An interest in your chosen area (have you been to any recent shows, events or exhibitions, whose work do you love, what do you find visually exciting - what are you passionate about?)

  • Theatre Arts (all pathways) - BA (Hons) top-up (third year only)

    Interviews will take place via telephone. You will need to submit a recent example of your formal written work from your course, ideally an essay. Please send this to vanessa.cornford@gbmc.ac.uk
