TESOL | Preparatory Course

Course Code: CM0215-1C Course Type: Adult qualifications and professional Campus: Broadwater Campus Start Date: 14 Sep 2021 Duration: 12 Weeks Entry requirements: Students will have to meet the Trinity College entry requirements.

Why this course?

Access to HE Humanities

A TESOL qualification gives the learner the necessary skills to teach English to speakers of other languages.

This course is the essential first stage for people who are interested in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) as a career. It covers basic theory and practice of teaching EFL/ESOL, and is an ideal starting point if you wish to train as an ESOL teacher.

On completion of the preparatory course, students may be eligible to progress to the TESOL certificate course.

  • student Views Ellen O'Neill TESOL Preparatory

I took the preparatory TESOL in January 2020. I would highly recommend the preparatory course to anyone who has no background in teaching or grammar, or who has not been in education for a while, as it is a great way to prepare yourself for the full TESOL. It covers basic grammar and teaching methods that are invaluable for the full course, as well as getting you comfortable with the use of phonetics.

Entry Requirements

It is not essential to have teaching experience or knowledge of a secondary language. Candidates should, however, have the equivalent of GCSE/"O" Level English and a good standard of spoken and written English. Students should be motivated to develop their study skills through reading suggested reference books and teaching materials.

Progression

On completion of the Preparatory Course in TESOL, students may be considered for the Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL, which is also offered at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College. Applicants should be at least 20 years of age and have academic qualifications (or equivalent) which allow entry to higher education (Tertiary level). This course is accredited at Level 5 in the UK National Qualifications Framework.

Although the Preparatory Course itself is not a full teaching qualification, in the past some students have been offered TEFL/TESOL employment with this course alone and have also gained private 1:1 teaching roles.
