Student wins competition to illustrate fantasy novel

First year BA Illustration student, Nick Purton, has won a competition to design a fantasy book for adults.

Author Matthew Bunn had written a trilogy, but unhappy with the illustrations of the first book, put out a call for an illustrator of the remaining two books in his Dragadelf series.

Fiona Rose, a PGCE student teacher who has been working with our illustration students, suggested this as a project. All 24 of the first year students took part, with Matthew attending a couple of Google Classroom meetings to give feedback to the students.

Nick Purton’s design for Dragadelf Shoulder to Shoulder, was chosen out of the 24 submissions, with Matthew awarding prize money for the winning illustration.

Illustration tutor, Alan Baker, praised Nick’s work and said, “He worked very diligently to get it right and deserved to win”.
