During this unique one-year programme you will explore the varied world of visual display and branding for fashion retail. You'll develop your specialist knowledge and skills throughout the course, to understand the importance of visual display through key design principles.

Entry requirements

There are no age restrictions for this qualification although you will be expected to be 18+ when you start.

You must have completed A-Levels or a Level 3 Extended Diploma, Foundation Diploma or a relevant apprenticeship.

The UAL Awarding Body recommends that you have GCSE grade 4 (or an equivalent Level 2 qualification) in both English and Maths.

About this course

You will develop the specialist knowledge and skills to understand the importance of visual display through key design principles, retail branding contexts, creative concepts and innovations. This will include: design for visualisation, retail branding contexts, retail concepts and innovations, understanding key roles and relationships, brand promotion, creative and commercial concepts, multiplatform functions and retail space planning and product promotion.

Course content includes:

  • Understanding past, present and future contexts in fashion retail
  • Preparation for Progression
  • Design for visualisation in retail contexts
  • Retail branding contexts
  • Fashion retail concepts and innovations
  • Individual negotiated retail project

You will also have opportunities to work collaboratively with degree-level fashion students.

Facilities

You will be part of a creative community at West Durrington, our specialist arts campus.

You will have access to state-of-the-art artists’ studios, a 3D workshop, darkroom, printmaking studio, Mac suites and pattern cutting room.

On successful completion of this course you may progress into higher education, employment/self employment and relevant roles in the fashion and retail sector. Examples include:

  • Junior visual merchandiser 
  • Sales/brand representative
  • Branding designer
  • Digital marketing 
  • Fashion styling
  • Fashion business and promotion

Many of our Creative Industries students continue their studies to degree-level, attending top universities including London College of Fashion, University of Westminster, Central Saint Martins and Nottingham Trent University.

We also offer a BA (Hons) Fashion degree at our West Durrington Campus which has excellent links with fashion brands.

This course is free (you do not have to pay fees) if:

  • You are a UK citizen, hold EU Settlement Status or have a visa which could qualify you for home status.
  • AND you are under 19 on 31 August in the year you are studying.

Additional costs

The majority of the equipment and materials are provided by the college to enable you to complete each project. However, you will be required to purchase an art and fashion kit from the college at the start of the course. Some financial support may be available for this.

All 16+ (full-time) courses are free to UK citizens, those who hold EU Settlement Status or have a visa which could qualify them for home status, AND are under 19 years old on the 31 August of the year of entry.
