Why this course?

This course is for you if you have a passion for trends, marketing, styling and fashion as well as an interest in working within the fast-paced retail and styling industry. Learn how interior retail spaces can be arranged in ways that attract customers, maximise their engagement with products, and motivate them to buy.

You will experience working in our brand new fashion and photography studios at our Central Brighton Campus with collaborative opportunities for practical work. Your learning will take place in our dedicated creative studios, computer suites and window display areas. You will develop your employability skills through work experience and live projects, plus you’ll go behind the scenes at independent and big brand stores in Brighton and London.

Entry requirements

You'll require at least four GCSEs grade 4 or above, including English, maths and preferably a creative subject. Also, you will have to pass a six week review.

If you do not have the above grades, start on our Level 2 Visual Merchandising and Styling course.

About this course

On this course you will get a general overview of visual merchandising for retail, interiors and fashion styling. You will learn the fundamental principles, inspiration and techniques involved in visual merchandising for interior retailers.

Course content includes:

  • Fashion management and marketing
  • Social media
  • Buying and merchandising
  • Styling
  • Visual merchandising and the future of fashion (including sustainability)

You will also have the opportunity to work on live project briefs and undertake work experience, which will provide invaluable links with local employers.

You will complete a Diploma in Year 1 and gain a standalone qualification. On successful completion of this, you will progress into Year 2 to gain the full Extended Diploma.

About this course

Facilities

The Creative Industries department at Brighton MET has an extensive and well-equipped range of practical working environments and brand new art studios at our Central Brighton Campus. This includes:

  • 3D printer, laser cutting machine, large scale ink jet printer, Canon EOS DSLR cameras, Mac suites, photographic suite
  • Printmaking workshop (screen, lino, metal and dry point etching)
  • 3D wood, metal and plastics workshop including a forge, a pattern cutting room and fashion studios

Our vibrant department has a broad range of staff who are all practising artists and designers involved in Brighton’s buzzing art and design scene. Our staff are here help you realise your potential.

After this course

On successful completion of this course you may wish to progress to our Level 4 Visual Merchandising and Styling course at Northbrook College.

Many of our Creative Industries students continue their studies to degree-level, attending top universities including London College of Fashion, University of Westminster, Central Saint Martins and Nottingham Trent University.

We also offer a BA (Hons) Fashion Design degree at our West Durrington Campus.

Course fees

This course is free (you do not have to pay fees) if:

  • You are a UK citizen, hold EU Settlement Status or have a visa which could qualify you for home status.
  • AND you are under 19 on 31 August in the year you are studying. 

This course is also free if you meet the following criteria:

  • You may not have to pay any fees if you will be aged 19 or over when you begin this course and:
  • You are a UK citizen, hold EU Settlement Status or have a visa which could qualify you for home status. 

 AND

  • You are in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • OR you are receiving a means tested benefit, earning less than £494 per month (take home) if you are a sole claimant or £782 a month if you have a joint claim with your partner, and are completing the course to improve your employability
  • OR if you are working and earn less than £18,525 per year (gross pay)
  • You will need to provide evidence and sign a declaration when you enrol.

Additional costs

The majority of the equipment and materials are provided by the college to enable you to complete each project. However, you will be required to purchase an art and fashion kit from the college at the start of the course. Some financial support may be available for this.
